Our approach to Nutrition: 80% Common sense + 20% Machine Learning to personalize
80% of our approach is common sense- 0 (processed foods)-1 (serving whole grain)-2 (serving of lentils)-3 servings of vegetables - sums up our basic meal plan- - and 20% is helping you optimize it for yourself using ML based techniques.
Common Sense: Wisdom + Ongoing Research
As X said- "Common sense is hard to find!" XYZ survey says people- even educated ones- are truly confused by foods. Nutrition science is broken. (link). So we went back to the basics.
Wisdom:
We think of wisdom is a set of general principles- vegetables are good for you and highly processed food not- that guides healthful living and is passed on culturally- daily lives, festivals, books etc. rather than formal double-blind statistical tests. We love synthesizing the common themes towards healthful living that stand the test of time and communities. Tell us your favorite book or just come share your stories!

Nerd Corner:
For our friends who like mathematics this approach is described as a Bayesian approach where we have an informative prior that is we start searching for good habits where common sense tells us a solution is likely to exist. For example, we prefer to start by thinking vegetables are better than fries rather than treating vegetables and fries as - probably equally healthy to begin.
Ongoing Research
Wisdom changes over time through great research. We found studies that are not industry funded and have been valid for 20 years and have been practically applied. We try to find the common elements.

Our Contribution: The largest, longest, live study of healthful habits
Habits can take years to affect our health and a lot of researchers cannot fund such studies. By leveraging our community in an anonymous (by design) way we want to conduct the most comprehensive, long lived study of healthful habits.
